For my projection mapping project, I want to explore the theme of memory and how it can become distorted over time. Memories are often thought of as fixed snapshots, but in reality, they shift, blur, and even rewrite themselves based on emotions, external influences, and the simple passing of time. To represent this, I am planning to project onto a collection of picture frames arranged on a table. The picture frames will symbolize personal photographs — tangible anchors to memories that might no longer exist exactly as they once did.
I want the projections to blend static images, abstract visuals, and short clips from films that deal with memory, such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind or Memento. Incorporating movie scenes would emphasize how memory is not just personal but also shaped culturally — how media influences what and how we remember. Some frames might glitch, blur, or fade over time to show how memories are often imperfect reconstructions rather than preserved facts.
I am considering using warm, nostalgic colors mixed with moments of sharp contrast or distortion to create an emotional push and pull between comfort and unease. I might also layer subtle sound design — echoes, overlapping voices, or faint music — to further immerse the viewer in a disorienting yet familiar experience. Overall, my goal is to create an environment that feels intimate but unstable, mirroring the fragility and unreliability of memory itself.
